I'm doing a reading this Friday...
Aug. 17th, 2009 07:48 amBROOKLINE, MA – Alex Newman, a local writer and performer, will be presenting a birthday tribute to Frank McCourt on Friday, August 21, 7 p.m. at The Brookline Booksmith in Coolidge Corner. Frank McCourt, who won the Pulitzer Prize for Angela’s Ashes: A Memoir and was author of three other best-selling books, would have been 79 this August. Mr. Newman was a student of Frank McCourt’s from 1981 to 1984 and remained close to his teacher until McCourt’s death on July 19, 2009.
The evening will include readings from Angela’s Ashes, ‘tis, and Teacher Man. Mr. Newman says “I picked three sections to read which tell part of the story of my history with Frank. I’ll show him arriving at Stuyvesant, read section of Angela’s Ashes he would read to us in class, and a section from ‘tis that I appear in”. Mr. Newman will also read some of his own unpublished writings about Frank McCourt, and hold a short Question and Answer session with the audience.
“Frank once told me that he didn’t know what a birthday party was when he was growing up,” said Newman. “And I wanted to throw him one. This event is a celebration, not a memorial”.
The reading will take place at The Brookline Booksmith, 279 Harvard St., Brookline, MA on Friday, August 21 at 7 p.m. Admission is free.
