How you feel is the most important thing. I think it is helpful to keep a record of where you've been, just to remind yourself how much you have accomplished already. I set large and small goals for myself: weight goals, clothing size goals, and physical goals for myself.
Some of these may seem silly to other people (like being able to boost myself out of the pool without using a ladder), but they give me a way to acknowledge my successes.

Getting heavy didn't happen all at once. I didn't eat one wrong thing and suddenly gain 50 pounds. It was years of minor failures. I'm looking at losing the weight the same way -- in reverse -- and I'll take whatever little victories I can get. Milestones? Heck, I'll take inchstones. I want to pat myself on the back and celebrate every tiny little step in the right direction -- because all those tiny little steps add up.
