It occurred to me that not everyone knew this... most of Casa Moomba will not be at Pennsic this year. That includes me, [livejournal.com profile] mermaidlady, and [livejournal.com profile] lakshmi_amman. The weather at last year's War took a lot out of us and we decided to take a year off. Please have medieval fun without us.

As it happens, we will also miss it this year, though in my case it has to do with work and housing more than weather.

Us too. Last year was too much work, and our housing wasn't sufficient to deal with the weather ;-)

IIRC you all also had an abysmal drive back also, right?

Yes, but I've mostly forgotten about it (http://new-man.livejournal.com/169509.html)

On one hand: Bummer! Pennsic's practically the only chance we Cat-Herders get to spend time with Casa Moomba.

On the other hand: Taking a year off can be great. I'm much more excited about Pennsic after a year off (and last year was apparently the Year to Miss!) Are you doing anything for an alternate vacation?

Are you doing anything for an alternate vacation?

Nothing two weeks long, but we were in New Orleans for a week in May for Lakshmi's birthday, I was in Vegas last month, and Morwenna and I spent a weekend in NH (at a hotel, not an SCA event ;-) ), and she's talking about going to Seattle in November.

sadness, there seems to be many people opting out or even worse being forced out of going to Pennsic due to financial concerns.

Money was part of it. We always thought of Pennsic as a "cheap" vacation, but it's really not so cheap these days. Pulling the trailer kills our mileage, and 1200 miles at $4 (or more!) a gallon and 20 miles to the gallon (if we're lucky) is $240 in gas alone. Add in tolls, food, gate fees, and consumables like firewood and ice, and all of a sudden it's not so cheap any more.

makes sense, it's a big part of why I'm paring down & taking the mini (36 mpg) vs taking everything I want & taking the Dodge Ram (14-18mpg depending)...

But you are right, pennsic really isn't so much of a cheap vacation.

We'll miss you (and probably also think a jealous thought or two of you folks basking in air-conditioned comfort :-D)--but it's important to recharge the batteries. I'm sure you'll find other fun waiting to be had :-)

This is our "off year". However, I'm glad it is because the way pricing is going, I was talking with Elizabethanrose and she was saying that around 3,000 people are opting out Pennsic this year. Sign of the prices affecting the times? Saturation level met? who knows. Have fun on your alternative vacations though.

Hmm. If it really is weather that's the problem, you can come and camp with us, if you like. We have a small camp this year, so there's plenty of room - you might even get to pitch camp on the top level if you came out early. Our camp is generally shielded from the more excessive vagaries of the weather.

It'd do wonders for your weight-loss quest, if you're of a mind, too. Ten plus days of solid fighting every day would do a lot, I suspect.

It's not solely the weather, but thank you for the offer. It's just time to take a year off.

Well, if you get a hankering as Pennsic unfolds, don't be shy about just showing up. You don't even need much more than armor and a tent - we're pretty well set for amenities. We'll find a spot for you.

Thanks again. We've got a show on July 26 and someone is inquiring about Aug. 7, so it seems unlikely -- but anything's possible.

Spending time with you and the rest of Strawberry Fields will be one of the things we're going to miss... but it was time to take a year off.
