A pleasant evening
Dec. 21st, 2007 08:17 amI had dinner last night with John, an old friend of mine (who's not on L.J.). Johnis the lead writer for , an Internet sketch comedy troupe who are responsible for some really funny videos like "Harry Potter & The Midlife Crisis" and "1-900-NERD-GIRL".
It was great to see him. He moved out to California more than 10 years ago, so we only see each other once or twice a year. We worked together on more than one wacky business, have a similar sense of ... well, almost everything.
We met in our old stomping grounds of Allston, and I even managed to find good parking despite the snow. We grabbed dinner at SoulFire — new, since John left. It's pretty good barbecue, made better by the cold and snow outside. I had the brisket, which is really good, and the mac& cheese which is uneven. Depending on who's in the kitchen, you either get baked mac 'n' cheese, or macaroni noodles with cheese poured over it and crushed ... something (crackers? potato chips? Durkee fried onion?) on top. Last night was, unfortunately, the latter.
The conversation wove in and out of what's going on in our lives to what comics we're reading and what we've been watching. In retrospect, it's a little odd to segué from parental health to the plot line in Captain America, but it made sense at the time. One of the nice things about chatting with an old friend. He gave Dexter a big thumbs up; I recommended Jekyll and The Lost Room (both of which I've been lucky enough to be gifted with in the past few months. If you're interested in borrowing them, let me know. They're really good). We realized that we've known each other just about 20 years. That made me feel good; I'm not close to many people that I knew back then (hey <lj user=brush_rat>, you're in a special club -- we're coming up on 18 years, I think).
He had good things to say about the Jimmy Tingle project, and asked some useful questions which helped sharpen things even further. I got home by about 8:30 p.m., did some work and headed to bed. Over all, a very pleasant evening.
